Alaska Cruise Shore Excursions: The Best in Each Port

Scott Miller asked:

An Alaska cruise can be the most memorable vacation you ever take. Part of what makes a glacier cruise so special are the shore excursions – the activities you select to do in each of the three or four ports you dock at.

This article highlights the most amazing shore excursion at each of the three most popular Alaska cruise ports of call, Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. Odds are, your cruise will stop at least two of these picturesque towns.

At each of your stops, you will have a wide variety of shore excursions to choose from. So which should you choose? Which excursions should you absolutely, positively not miss out on? That’s exactly what you’re about to find out.

The Best Ketchikan, Alaska Shore Excursion

Ketchikan is the southernmost port of call on most Inside Passage glacier cruises. It’s a beautiful little island town set amongst the lush Tongass rainforest, surrounded by magnificent peaks, waterfalls, and glaciers.

There is actually much to see within walking distance of the Ketchikan cruise ship docks, including the shops along quaint and picturesque Creek Street, with its historic buildings overhanging a crystal-clear, salmon-filled stream.

However, there is one Alaska cruise shore activity in Ketchikan that you will really kick yourself if you miss, and that is the float plane excursion to Misty Fjords National Monument.

Most Alaska cruise ship itineraries do not include a visit to Misty Fjords, so this float plane trip will most likely be your lone opportunity to view one of the most amazing places you will ever see. Known as the “Yosemite of the North”, Misty Fjords is a glacier-carved wonderland, where literally hundreds of waterfalls plunge down steep, verdant cliffs into the pristine waters of the long, narrow bays.

At the end of each fjord is an amazing glacier, which calves, breaking off icebergs which plunge into the bay in a thrilling natural spectacle.

The float plane is simply the best way to experience the majestic beauty of this national monument, and most tours include a stop within on of the fjords, so that you can actually get out and explore an incredible region that few people ever get to see.

Honestly, if I had to choose just one Alaska cruise shore excursion, this would be it. It’s an adventure you will thoroughly enjoy and I doubt you will ever forget.

The Best Juneau Shore Excursion

Juneau is a beautiful small city set on a salt water channel and surrounded by magnificent alpine peaks. The capitol of Alaska, Juneau is a nature lover’s paradise, with great shops, restaurants, and the only glacier within the municipal limits of any city.

The one Juneau shore excursion you really shouldn’t miss is the glacier-top dog sled adventure. What trip to Alaska would be complete without a dog sled ride? Of course, your Alaska cruise will take place in the summer (or late spring), so you will find most areas snow-free and in their lush, green summer state.

However atop one of the area’s massive rivers of ice known as tidewater glaciers, it is always winter. This trip includes a helicopter ride out of Juneau, during which you will get an aerial tour of the massive glacier, an astonishing site. This is without a doubt the best way to get a sense of the size of these glaciers.

Then you land on the glacier will be taken on a one-hour dog sled ride across the snow and ice. This is utterly fun and thrilling, the perfect way to experience Alaska.

The Best Skagway Shore Excursion

The port of Skagway is the northernmost in the Inside Passage. Located at the end of a long, beautiful fjord, Skagway has a rich gold rush history which lives on in its historic buildings and museums.

As with Ketchikan and Juneau, there is much to see within walking distance of the cruise ship docks in Skagway, including the wonderful small shops, museums, and restaurants of the main street.

The best Skagway shore excursion is the Glacier Point Wilderness Safari. The adventure starts with a 45 minute catamaran ride along Alaska’s deepest fjord to Glacier Point, where you will land on a beach, where a bus awaits to take you to a trailhead for a short walk to an overlook with an absolutely stunning view of the glacier.

From there, you will head to a landing, where you will board long canoes for a paddle past massive icebergs, along the base of the huge glacier. This is a simply incredible experience that you just can’t miss.

So those are the three best Alaska cruise shore excursions. Each is an exciting, once in a lifetime experience. If you manage to fit all three into your cruise itinerary, you will have an amazing, memorable, and downright fun trip. In fact, it could even be your favorite vacation ever.

Going On Alaska Travel Cruises – Things You Should Avoid

Pierre Smith asked:

Just like your life, there are rules, regulations and safety measures that need to be followed when going on Alaska travel cruises. It has been implemented to keep the passengers safe as well as for the fellow passengers to enjoy the cruise to Alaska while others are implemented for legal matters. Although these are not full list of rules and regulations, each cruise lines will have rules and regulations exclusive for them only, hence you should check with cruise line you are choosing to get your full list of rules and regulations.

The first and foremost issue that must be adhered on Alaska travel cruises is that you must in no means bring any illegal drugs in the cruise line with you. If you are caught you will have very big legal issues as these drugs are all illegal no matter what your excuse is. It will be a serious issue even if you bring a small portion of it for your personal use. Hence try avoiding bringing any drugs on board in the ship.

Never harass the fellow guests on board the cruise line. Trouble makers are actually dealt with by the staff members. It will not be tolerated at all if someone is creating troubles to the fellow passengers, as the aim of everyone is to enjoy Alaska travel cruises. If you already are having a trouble with a particular person, try as much as you can on avoiding that person. This definitely will help you in getting into trouble on the vacation.

Don’t show off your big cash when you are the cruise. You should actually never be revealing your huge cash even on the ship as well as on shore. If you show off big money you are actually inviting someone to be robbed which may end up in physical injuries too. So try to hide your money in any way even when you are trying to pay for the merchandise on board.

At shore never ever go off on the port of call to the inside areas of this beautiful state which is actually famous for the wildlife. It could be dangerous for you and should try to avoid being alone on the wild. If you are in the remote areas there should actually be a guide to help you move around safely. Even in the terrains, it is dangerous to be alone in case of emergency to get help from someone.

Never feed the wild animals, unless specially instructed by the guide to do so on the shore excursion, as many parks don’t allow feeding the wild animal. It is mostly for safety concern only. This rule must be followed even when you are in the remote area. Although you will get an opportunity to feed the animals but here it is better to follow the proper instructions of the guide. And also remove all the trash that you will be leaving behind for the protection of animals and to keep Alaska clean rather than polluting them.

When To Travel To Alaska

Michael Russell asked:

The weather patterns in Alaska can be extreme and quite unpredictable. You may be bathing in the sunlight for weeks before being blown out into the Pacific. The temperatures vary from a high of 100 degrees to a low of negative 80 degrees. Make sure you know what to expect depending on the month you choose to travel in.

June – August

The summer months are perhaps the most exciting time of the year. The sun shines nearly all day long here making for some very short nights. The sun energizes people as it refuses to go down. June 21st is the longest day of the year and it shines for 21 hours in Alaska that day. Even throughout the summer, you can expect some longer than normal daylight hours. June is the driest and the best month in the summer to travel. Alaska is generally warm depending on where you go. In the Arctic it is of course cooler than in the southern region. In the Artic, the snow could stick around until mid-June making for a cold and muddy experience up through the trails in the mountains. July is warmer than June is but not nearly as wet as in August. August is the rainiest time of the year so make sure to pack a raincoat and umbrella.

Summer does have one drawback while all the tourists flood to Alaska, high prices. The tourist industry has but 90 days to make all of the money they can to live on for that year. Working 3 months and having 9 months off pushes them to make as much money as possible and the higher the prices the better for them. July is the busiest travel month and this is where they make most of their money. From mid-June to mid-August is where the bulk of the tourists come to experience Alaska and it really drops off before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. Cruises are very popular from May to October.

May & September

These 2 months are still particularly good for travel. May is when the earlier tourists start flying in or coming in on cruises. By September, things are calming down and the remaining tourists are hoping to steal the last good deal of the year. May is warmer than September but this can vary. It depends greatly on where you travel. The farther north you go and the earlier in May you decide to travel; you will experience more chilly weather along with snow and mud. Alaska does not have a spring, they have a “breakup” where the snow and ice start to melt and cover everything with mud.

September can be a hit or miss month. You could experience warm and dry weather but the opposite is very true too. September can throw a foot and a half of rain on you while the sun barely peeks out. The weather patterns can be unpredictable but the sights could be the best if you catch it just right. The lights reflected from the snowy tundra and the boreal forest prompt an amazing display of bright, vivid colors in the sky.

October, November & April

These transition months take us from the busy summer months to the colder months in the winter. Tourists find little to do during this time. October is very wet and November is the start of winter however there is still not enough snow to ski or enjoy other winter activities. April is the end of winter when the snow melts and the mud forces many places to close.

December – March

The winter is the most exciting time of the year when anything that can be done with snow and ice is. February though mid-March is the peak of the winter where the sun gives you longer days. Many activities happen including skiing, snowmobile races, ice carving, snowshoeing, dog mushing and more. Winter is also the time for Anchorage’s Fur Rendezvous in February and Iditarod Dog Sled race in March.

Alaska Repositioning Cruises

Sarah Forth asked:

The cruising season in the Gulf of Alaska is a short one. And by mid-September, most of the cruise ships that have spent the summer sailing there head for sunnier climates.

The Jones Act, which was passed in 1920 as the Merchant Marine Act to protect the interests of U.S. cargo vessels, requires cruises that begin in the U.S. to end outside the U.S., unless another country is visited. For instance, Alaska cruises can’t begin in Seattle and end in an Alaska port, unless they call in a Canadian port en route.

That’s why many Alaska cruises and Alaska Repositioning cruises begin in Vancouver, BC. If you haven’t been, Vancouver is a spectacular city, well worth an overnight stay before joining your cruise.

One of the advantages of repositioning cruises is their flexibility. You can often disembark in more than one port, meaning you can tailor your cruise to suit your schedule. If you board the Coral Princess in Vancouver, you can disembark three days later in Los Angeles, or stay on board and disembark 18 nights later in Fort Lauderdale after transiting the Panama Canal.

Those who want to see how they like cruising can take a 3-night cruise from Vancouver to Los Angeles for as little as $99 for an inside cabin. A balcony is only $100 more. This is a terrific cruise bargain for potential cruisers who want to test the waters.

For a nice, leisurely voyage, consider the 17-night Vancouver to Fort Lauderdale cruise aboard the Island Princess. The ship visits San Francisco, Acapulco, Huatulco, and Costa Rica before transiting the Panama Canal. It also calls at Aruba en route to Fort Lauderdale.

With a capacity of 1,900 passengers, the Island Princess has all the amenities, including a steakhouse and Italian and Cajun restaurants.

If you want to see some of Alaska before going down the Pacific Coast, Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas calls at Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan before visiting Seattle, Astoria, and San Francisco. Passengers disembark 14 days later in San Diego. With fares starting at around $100 per person, per night, this is a good cruise value.

Norwegian’s 7-night cruise from Vancouver to Los Angeles aboard the Norwegian Star is one of the least expensive repositioning cruises, with fares starting at $50 per person, per night. The ship does this itinerary in reverse in May of 2010.

The Norwegian Pearl sails from Vancouver to Los Angeles in five nights and stops in Astoria and San Francisco along the way. This is a good choice if you like days at sea and plenty of time to enjoy the shipboard amenities.

If you have the time — and the money — the 46-night trans-Pacific sailing aboard Holland America’s Volendam is an unbelievable cruise bargain. The ship calls at ports in Japan, Korea, China, and Vietnam before arriving in Hong Kong. Best of all, the Volendam overnights in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong so you can experience those cities at night.

Alaska Cruise FAQs

Jennifer Bailey asked:

Alaska, along with its breathtaking scenic beauty, is also known for its unpredictable weather and fluctuating temperatures. Therefore, it is essential for the tourists to have some general information about the state, its weather, seasonal temperature, and clothing required. Before planning a trip to this beautiful spot, it is important to go through extensive information on Alaskan cruises.

The most important information sought is what would be the best season for such a cruise. Tourists usually enquire about the weather conditions, and general temperature levels, in order to prepare for the tour accordingly, with sufficient and appropriate clothing. People also enquire about the cruise lines sailing to Alaska, including the availability of small ships. The duration of these cruises is another factor in case of families with toddlers.

It is said that it never gets dark in Alaska, and hence this is one of the most frequently asked question by the tourists, to check if it is true. The visibility time and period of the whales, and other sea-creatures, can be some of the most relevant, of the various other questions concerning the cruise. Parents try to find out whether it would be ideal for small kids, as the weather conditions are extremely cold and difficult to manage. Fun-lovers usually enquire about fishing and casino provisions. The appropriate side of the ship, offering the best views of the glaciers and Mount Mc Kinley are also enquired about. Cases of seasickness require serious consideration before planning an Alaskan cruise.

The most important part of the cruise would be the bookings, without which the experience cannot happen at all. Therefore, it is imperative to find out the booking options, payment methods, and availability of the cruise bookings. Considering all the conditions, whether Alaska can be an ideal vacation spot, has often been one of the major points for travelers to think upon. Tourists also enquire about the options of extending the vacation, and people from other countries tend to find out about the necessity of a passport for the trip.
